Curriculum vitae

Dr. Davide Caputo studied psychology and film at the University of Manitoba, completed his Ph.D. at the University of Exeter, and earned a Post Graduate Certificate of Education specialising in Post-Compulsory and Higher Education from Canterbury Christ Church University. He is an Associate Lecturer of Film Studies at the University of Kent, where he has taught courses on the cinema of Roman Polanski, film authorship and the general introduction to film studies.

He has contributed essays and reviews to Film International and Scope, and is the author of the book Polanski and Perception: The Psychology of Seeing and the Cinema of Roman Polanski, published by Intellect and University of Chicago Press in 2012, and which is being translated by Beijing Beepub Media and Culture Publishing for a forthcoming Chinese language edition.

Davide is currently working on an inquiry into cinematic representations of the co-occurrence of mental illness and creative endeavour. The project’s conceptual framework is established through an overview and meta-analysis of the research and the history of theoretical discourse regarding the possibly-causal relationship (and directionality) of various forms of mental illness and the creative disposition, which is then applied to an extended discussion on the overall cinema of Lars von Trier and Woody Allen, as well as close-analyses, comparisons and critiques of films such as The Shining, Barton Fink, and Inland Empire, and biopics of eminent creative individuals known to have suffered from psychotic disorders, including A Beautiful Mind, Sylvia, The Hours, Camille Claudel, and more. The book, Watching the Life of the Mind: Creativity and Mental Illness in Film, is due to be published by Intellect and University of Chicago Press in 2015.
