Heliotropic Media: Botany, Photography, and Sensory Experience at the Loheland School

This talk investigates the work of the Loheland gymnast, dancer, and physical educator Bertha Günther. A footnote in the history of photography, Günther is remembered primarily as the ‘Loheländerin’ that first introduced László Moholy-Nagy to the possibilities of cameraless photography. Günther began making photograms in the early 1920s, working with printing-out paper and botanical materials. Little is known about Günther, and even less about her photograms, of which only thirteen survive. Part of a larger book project on the intersection of botany, photochemistry, and photographic theory, this talk represents a preliminary attempt to address archival absence by considering Günther’s photograms through the physical pedagogy of the Loheland School, which approached dance and gymnastics as a means of cultivating the body’s spatial awareness and attunement with the rhythms of the natural world. As I will argue, the act of making photograms in the open air, for Günther and her colleagues, suggested an extension of this practice, opening up an ecological understanding of the photographic surface and the chemical bonds linking metals, plants, and human bodies.

Die Schwestern Lumière. Ein foto- und filmhistorisches Gedankenexperiment 

Während die Brüder Auguste und Louis Lumière bis heute als Erfinder des Cinématographe erinnert werden, ist kaum bekannt, dass auch drei Schwestern – Jeanne, Juliette und France – zur Familie gehörten. Was hiesse es, die Geschichte des Kinematographen Lumière (und die des frühen Kinos überhaupt) aus der Perspektive dieser Schwestern zu erzählen? Der Vortrag unternimmt eine spekulative Spurensuche nach Formen weiblicher Arbeit in den Film- und Fotoindustrien des späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts und nach möglichen Schlupflöchern im filmhistoriografischen Wissensgefüge.

From Conventional Disciplines to Interdisciplinary Approaches: Cinema as a Case Study

In this colloquium, I will reflect on my own research journey to show how the study of cinema can open onto broader interdisciplinary conversations. My work has moved from conventional auteurist analysis, to feminist readings of genre films, to exploring how film stardom responds to cultural and political crises of place, and most recently to unpacking the exhibition of cinema in art spaces. Taken together, these projects chart an expanding trajectory of cinema studies — one that pushes beyond disciplinary boundaries and engages with wider cultural, social, and artistic contexts.

Autosoziobiographie und Film

Seit dem Erfolg von Didier Eribons „Rückkehr nach Reims“ und dem Literaturnobelpreis für Annie Ernaux haben Autosoziobiographien auf dem Buchmarkt Konjunktur. Wie sieht es im Bereich des Films aus? In meiner Präsentation werde ich autosoziobiographische Erzählweisen im zeitgenössischen Essayfilm diskutieren – Erzählweisen also, die das Persönliche mit dem Politischen und Gesellschaftlichen verbinden und Fragen von Klasse und Herkunft thematisieren – und dabei über inhaltliche Bestimmungen hinaus nach dem Politischen der Form fragen.
