Berthold Viertel: The Aesthetic and Ideological Contradictions of Exile

Austrian-born Berthold Viertel (1885-1953) is one of the less well-known exile filmmakers from the first part of the 20th century. Active from the 1910s through to the late 1940s as a writer, translator, director for screen and stage, his career included creative periods in Vienna, Berlin, London, Hollywood, and New York. In this lecture I concentrate on his film work in British exile in the mid-1930s, which encompassed the sensitive psychological drama Little Friend (1934), the magical realism of The Passing of the Third Floor Back (1935), and the imperialist biopic Rhodes (1936), three films whose radical difference from each other appears to confound attempts to locate the films’ meaning in the director’s aesthetic, ideological and ethical sensibilities.
