Nikola Radić (Universität Zürich) In my dissertation, I analyze the aesthetics and ethics of representation of landscape, architecture, and the rarefied human presence in six documentary and experimental films by contemporary filmmakers from the former Yugoslav region. The central questions I address are: what are political landscapes? How does the Yugoslav post-generation cinematically articulate a relation between abandoned architecture and socialist memory? Are the socialist people reemerging from the archives to haunt deserted landscapes and derelict interiors? |

Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi (Eye Filmmuseum, Amsterdam) As an archival curator I sift through the nitrate reels in order to identify, catalogue and decide for further restoration of films. Most of the silent films we receive are forgotten and presumed lost films. As such they often defy pre-existing notions of film history and testify to our collective ignorance. For how does one even talk about an actress whose real name remains unknown? In this talk, based on concrete examples, I will be addressing questions like: What does one see from the inside of the film archive? Are the archival collections really what the audience expect them to be? What can be done to re-write the forgotten film history? |
